This excerpt had come about in the middle of chapter 15 after Mrs. Burt began to demand for her rent money. The use of diction in this excerpt is informal, and explicitly uses terms that indicate both anger and distress. For example, as she was describing her own sister, she called her an “ungrateful slut”. To say such a thing to someone means that the individual, whom is being told this, has completely forgot about the people that have helped her in the past, and does not do anything in return. This also shows that the individual being referred to is now a whore.
