Thousands of crimes happen every day, but this one opened the eyes of everyone. The tragedy in Mazar-i-Sharif in 1998 is one that marked the infamous Taliban group as one of the most ruthless extremists. The conclusion of the massacre resulted in the death of 8,000 people, most of which were just citizens of the city, and it even included women being raped. Many citizens were able to escape, bringing back stories and visuals of the horrific events, but these eventual deaths and stories would help lead to an investigation which could help them discover the motives of these extreme methods of warfare. There were definitely factors that would lead to the idea of revenge against the Taliban. The Taliban had killed 8 Iranian Diplomats, which did not make the Iranian president, Hashemi Rafsanjani, too thrilled to say the least and resulted in him promising that “we will get revenge for their blood” (Jehl). The Iranians were not willing to just sit back and let the Taliban do whatever they please, which the attitude is shown by Rafsanjani. Also, in general, the Taliban invasion of Mazar-i-Sharif was a major factor.
