Murderball: Motivational Quadriplegic Sport Murderball is an MTV produced sports documentary about quad rugby which was invented in Canada. In this game, quadriplegic players play for four 8 minutes quarters. These players are scored from .5 to 3.5 depending on motor function in their limbs. Cumulative score cannot exceed 8 points while maintaining 4 players on each side. Just like American football or rugby tackles, tackling a rugby chair is allowed in this game. The sports part of Murderball revolves around final competition that takes place in Athens where USA and Canada are seen as the biggest competitors with hope of breaking a tie. These interactions and scenes included contain how these quad rugby players feel about how they are treated. Among many of interactions between quad rugby players and non-disabled people, one big underlining concept emphasized by directors is how most players don’t like being pitied with exception of some who use it for attracting ladies. One of the player- Andy Cohn who suffered a spinal cord injury at age of sixteen- says, “People say some of the dumbest things, like I would be at the grocery store loading the groceries into my car and then I go to get my car, and they’ll be like well do you need help in your car, and it’s like well I wouldn’t have come to the grocery store if I couldn’t get back to my car,” which tells the viewers that despite suffering through disabilities, they are able to be self-sustainable. This concept concerns more than definition of disability but social and emotional aspect of these human beings who want to feel like nothing has happened. This represents that people with disability can forgive their circumstances if they are treated as normal people, which they are. It may be hard to accept their new lives, but usually after two years most quadriplegics get enough time to adjust and think of themselves as normal people and not patients- these two years of understanding new circumstances is where Cavill is. In the end, if they are socially accepted as normal human beings, they will have no regret of their pasts, but if they are socially considered disabled, they feel that they have no place in the “normal” world. In Murderball these issues are tackled very precisely and makes it one of the big reason to watch the film. People with disabilities deserve civil rights like everyone else, and they should have equipment to help them stand on their own rather than be pitied by someone else. This is another concept that the movie attempts to explain from sociopolitical model of disability
