INTRODUCTION

Muscle deconditioning is a common consequence of prolonged immobility or reduced physical activity levels, leading to weakening and loss of muscle strength and function over time. This phenomenon occurs when muscles are not utilized as frequently or as vigorously as usual, resulting in a decline in muscle mass, strength, and endurance. In the context of nursing care, understanding the implications of muscle deconditioning is crucial, particularly in post-operative patients recovering from procedures such as coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Following CABG surgery, patients often undergo a period of restricted mobility and physical activity as part of their post-operative recovery process. Factors such as pain, fatigue,

The brain and spinal cord coordinate motor signals and sensory feedback during walking. Damage or dysfunction in these central nervous system structures can contribute to impaired gait patterns.

Signs and Symptoms

Subjective Data: Patient reports feeling weak and tired after walking short distances. Patient states needing help from family members to move around the house. Patient expresses frustration and concern about their limited mobility post-surgery. Patient reports feeling unsteady on their feet and fearful of falling.

Objective Data Slow and shuffling gait observed during ambulation. Limited range of motion and muscle weakness noted in lower extremities. Difficulty rising from a seated position without assistance. Decreased muscle strength assessed through manual muscle testing. Dependence on assistive devices, such as a walker or cane, for mobility. Assistance required from another person for activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and toileting.
