Muscular Force. The abdominal muscles, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles all work together to produce a muscular force to help move the athlete when backhanding a ground ball. These muscles help the athlete accelerate and decelerate to change direction into the drive step. This force is necessary to thrust the body into the throw and provide more power behind the throw. The rate of acceleration increases with more force produced. Levers. There are several levers in the body that help the athlete field a backhand. These levers found in the body can be classified in three categories, are used to overcome resistance, and rotate on a fixed point. Hip flexion is exhibited during the drive step phase and is slassified as a 2nd class lever. The resistance point of the hip occurs when the athlete must transfer weight from the left to the right side of the body, from prepatory step to drive step. This resistance occurs as the hip’s axis, the joint of the hip, bends. Another point in the body that can be classified as a lever is the knee. Flexion occurs in the drive step phase when fielding the backhand, which classifies the knee as a 3rd class lever. As flexion occurs the knee joint bends and provides an axis for the lever. Force is produced in proximal head of the tibia and fibula toward the origin of the hamstrings, as the shin provides a resistance point. The knee, along with the rotation of the trunk produces torque as the athlete moves from the prepatory step to drive step. It is defined as the amount of force placed on an object.
