After World War 1 and the defeated Ottoman Empire Kemal was promoted to brigadier-general and sent to fight in eastern Turkey, Syria and Palestine. Afterwards he rose through and formed Turkey for how it is known today. He was also a military officer during World War I.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a Turkish army officer and commander during Gallipoli. He was commander of division 19 in charge of defending the slopes of Gallipoli against the British during the Gallipoli campaign in World War I. He later led the Ottoman counter attacks to recapture Chunuk Bair during the Sari Bair offensive. I will look at his perspective during this time;

During the first Balkan war Mustafa Kemal fought against Bulgaria at Gallipoli. He also played an important role in recapturing North Western parts of Turkey during the Second Balkan War. Following the second Balkan war Mustafa Kemal was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. This may have impacted Kemal’s beliefs and actions he took on the Gallipoli peninsula three years later during World War 1.
Mustafa Kemal had opposed the Ottoman Empire’s decision to side with the Central Powers but had spirit for Turkey to protect his homeland. Kemal was known as a strong Ottoman commander during World War I and at Gallipoli. In the time it takes us to die, other troops and commanders can come and take our place.”(3) This was a gamble as it may have cost the Turkish many lives and ended in defeat but Mustafa Kemal’s action of sending troops ‘to die’ ended in victory. This expresses how passionate he was about defending his country and shows how this eventually led to the Turkish containing the ANZACs and enforcing a stalemate.

After the Anzacs had gained land at Chunuk Bair successfully they had control of it for a before before Kemal was appointed defense commander. He led his troops and forced the Allies back down the peninsula. Kemal and his division was only three hundred meters away from the firing line. The campaign became a disastrous defeat for the Anzacs as after the battle at Chunuk Bair they were pinned down by the Turks for ten months unable to advance up the steep hills.
Mustafa Kemal became the outstanding front-line commander and after to promoting to colonel he gained much respect and recognition.
