In the story, the people take a drug called soma to relax. Every other Thursday Bernard attends a Solidarity Service where the participants sit twelve at a table. All of the participants take soma, a while later the soma kicks in. “Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of the universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles,” (Huxley 81). Bernard is not the type to take soma all the time, therefore Lenina and everyone else tries to bribe him to take the soma. Lenina says, “Remember one cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments,” (Huxley 89). Emotions’ presence is essential to humanity. Having feelings results in love and that is one thing that most people look forward to in life. In our world, it is wrong to be pneumatic, but in the World State, it is totally normal. There is no reason that anyone should take some sort of drug just to feel different. Humanity without emotion would make things worse by them not having feelings, being pneumatic, and taking soma for
