My Ct's Large Group Lessons

Most of my CT’s large group lessons are the same. She has about half the students come to the carpet and the other half stay at their desk. Generally, she uses the SmartBoard as a visual and accompanies the visuals with discussion and questioning. Often the students have white boards, therefore, they are able to follow along with their own visuals and individually solve or find their own answers. My CT is usually very interactive with students. The students and teacher count together, she asks critical thinking questions, they share their work and solve problems as a group. If they have their white boards they hold up their boards to show the teacher their answer. My CT does a very good job at illustrating all the key points and exampling all the steps necessary to understand the concepts being taught. Most of the students appear engaged and the lessons suffer minimal disruptions if any. She is always well prepared and knows exactly what she is going to say. It is critical that the teaching strategies and methods use doing large group lessons are effective for the students. Engaging them and interacting with them are always good strategies to make the lesson inclusive. Use of whiteboards during a large group lesson is an excellent method to include ALL students. Being able to actually follow along with the teacher’s work allows students to better comprehend the lesson and they all feel included, which is important for students. Lessons should be interactive and cover a range of learning styles. The strategies my CT use do that. The SmartBoard is visual, discussion and questions are auditory, and the whiteboard aspect aids to the kinesthetic learners.
