Up to 6 million fellow Jews were killed and many of the ones who survived had a number of health problems in the physical way they were treated but also how it affected them psychologically. While Bella did have to go through some labor, she was hidden in a bunker where she shared with another family while Elie was moved from camp to camp and was working in the labor force to stay alive. They both also lost their parents to the holocaust and while Elie was separated from his mother and sisters, he still had his father for a long period of time and he always had someone that was there for him while Bella had to go through this without her family and considered herself an orphan after learning upon her family’s death.
