My Most Influential Trip

Gelato, bike rides around the city, and the beauty of another language: These three things are just some of the things that I did and encountered on the most influential trip of my life. In the summer of 2015, I traveled with a school group to Spain and Italy. Over those two weeks, I saw and tried more new things than ever before. The experience was life changing.

My mom and I traveled to Spain and Italy with a group from my school the summer after my freshman year. We flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Spain. This was my first time flying over the ocean. It was exciting but nerve wracking. Once we had gotten to Madrid, we started our sightseeing immediately. At almost every meal we ate the local cuisine of Spain, paella, a dish of rice and either chicken or seafood, which was amazing and extremely different from the foods that I normally ate for dinner at home. Our group used the Spanish we had learned to order and communicate with the people of Spain. Many spoke English also, but it helped expand our Spanish vocabulary. It was a huge culture shock going from the US to Spain. The food was different, the language was different, and the community was different. We even went to a nude beach, which is something that I would had never experienced without going on this trip. Another thing we did was take a bike ride through the city, which allowed us to just see the city and enjoy ourselves.
