I would also tell her that I noticed how my writing has changed after taking this course and that I have learned many new things. Three of my favorite lessons were the formatting of dialogues in an essay, the rhetorical analysis, and the annotated bibliography for the explanatory synthesis essay. Before taking this course, I was unfamiliar with the structure and formatting of dialogues in writing. I did not know that I should use quotation marks to indicate the beginning and end of spoken dialogue, or that creating a new paragraph for each speaker was necessary. However, now I pay attention to the structure of dialogues whenever I see them, and I know how to use them. I realized that I like to use dialogue as a way to make writing feel more descriptive, and it presents a good opportunity to employ the rhetorical principle of “Show, don’t just tell.” (Reid, 2010). Additionally, during our lessons on rhetorical analysis, I was surprised to realize that I had not previously noticed the patterns and techniques used by skilled speakers.
