My Sister's Keeper Thematic Essay

Many issues have arised out of the Fitzgerald family ever since Kate was diagnosed. They have been working hard on fixing them, but it seems like once one problem is fixed another arises. While Jodi Picoult’s “My Sister’s Keeper” was intended on being a sad fiction story of a young girl who has cancer that practically causes her family to fall apart, it was also a story of nonfiction by showing how family values should always come first (which a lot of us do not often think about or realize). Although many conflicts and problems arose between the family members they still managed to find themselves pushing to stay together, and doing their best to get through all of the problems they faced. Jesse asked the doctor “Wait, would mine work?”. (My Sister’s Keeper P.G. 97) That simple statement goes a long way as to how much Jesse does care, and how much family values still meant to the family. Jesse helping Kate, deep down, is exactly what he needs right now to help him feel like he matters and can help his sister, and family. When he finds out that he can not do anything about it, he realized in his own mind how useless he really is. “My Sister’s Keeper” demonstrates the importance of family values, and how much this family demonstrates them all through the story. Especially through the emotions and feelings toward each other even through all of the tough times they experience throughout the book. Why are family values so important?
