Mya has had her share of personal and family oriented challenges. She comes from a split family and has spent time living in between two homes for the better part of the last four years. Since her seventh grade year Mya has lived in rural …show more content…
Her favorite subjects included English, science and Navajo language courses. Despite facing many challenges, Mya has been able to maintain a 3.7 cumulative GPA and is gearing up to graduate. During the summer between her junior and senior years, Mya had the opportunity to represent Bloomfield High School at a college prep program called College Horizons, which gave her an opportunity to begin the discussion around college as well as the chance to connect with other Native American students from across the country. She realized the importance of not only attending college for herself, but for her fellow Native Americans as a way of protecting the heritage and the culture that she is so determined to enhance and preserve. Mya sees this opportunity as a way to contribute to her communities in a lasting and meaningful way. She is now looking forward to graduation so that she can pursue her dreams of focusing on and obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Native American or American studies and, eventually, she wants a career that is geared toward helping the broader Native
