The project I will be working for NRSE 4600 is a current issue in the acute care setting that is related in the high incidence of Foley catheter infection rates. The high number of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) result in further complication for the patient and could potentially increase their hospital days. The use of Foley catheters in critical care is at an astoundingly high rate due to patient acuity and the need for strict intake and output monitoring. Patients in critical care are typically on the ventilator, on sedation, pressors and diuretics so an indwelling Foley catheter is necessary. In other instances, patients on this floor experience ICU delirium resulting from the …show more content…
However, when a patient’s health status improves, the catheter remains indwelling due the “conveniences” of the patient care process. This project relates to Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) by addressing both patient-centered care and evidence based practice findings. When patient’s health status has improved, nurses should take the initiative to discontinue the catheters to decrease the incidences of catheter related infection rates to promote better patient outcomes. The latest research shows that it is best practice to encourage nurses for early discontinuation of catheters to decrease the rate of CAUTI and the complications associated with it. Implementing catheter rounds is an excellent way to provoke awareness on the importance of early catheter removal and shifts
