NURS 479 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing: Case 2.
Description of the patient: Patient is a 62-year-old adult male who was admitted to the Adult Geriatric unit for suicide attempt by using a glass shard to slit his wrist. History of present illness (HPI) D.F., a 62-year-old African American male, was admitted for suicidal attempts while living at the nursing home. The patient is a voluntary admission and was brought in by EMS. The patient’s current diagnosis includes schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. Mr. D. F. stated that suicide attempts are secondary to the poor care received at the nursing home for the past two years. Per the family, they recognized that there were notable issues at the nursing home that are under further investigation.…show more content… (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020, p.1107)-Trazodone is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder. May also be used off-label to treat symptoms of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and fibromyalgia due to its effects on various neurotransmitter receptors (MDD) (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,p.1107) -150mg PO initially divided in two doses -Maximum dosage of 600mg daily (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,p.1107) Sedation, dizziness, edema, cardiac dysrhythmias, (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020, p.1107)-Trazodone should be administered with food for maximum absorption. (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,p.1107) Risperidone 0.5mg (Risperdal) Inhibit the D2 dopaminergic receptors and 5-HT2A serotonergic receptors in the brain Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,p.1111) -Treatment of schizophrenia and acute bipolar mania(Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,p.1111) - 0.5 mg 2 times a day,max dose 16mg/day ( Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. Be careful going up and down stairs. High blood sugar or diabetes, high cholesterol, and weight gain have happened with drugs like this one. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this drug. Dizziness, sleepiness, and feeling less stable may happen with this drug. These may lead to falls, which can cause broken bones or other health problems (Frandsen & Pennington, 2020,
