Being the first Cherokee woman to sit on the tribal council is a big deal. That's like being the first woman president! Nancy Ward played a big part of Cherokee’s history. Her birth date is 1738. As a child her childhood wasn't like you think.
This was because of the constant warfare and terrorism caused by European settlers. When she got older she got married and had two kids. But there was a battle of Creeks and Cherokee. During the battle her husband was wounded, she took his place in the war.
She lead the Cherokees to victory. Because of that her clan chose her as the “Beloved Woman.” To the Cherokees this name meant that a great spirit could be spoken through the Beloved Woman.
