Over the period of six weeks, the citizens of the Chinese city of Nanking (Nanjing) went through unimaginable, scarring atrocities that can only be described as hell on earth. Subsequent of the bloody battle of Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese war, Chiang Kai-Shek, China’s Nationalist Leader, in fear of being defeated in battle, ordered the removal of all official Chinese troops in Nanking and left the city to be defended by untrained auxiliary troops. With the intention of maintaining the city, Chiang forbade the official evacuation of citizens. An abounding amount of people neglected his order and departed the city, but many were left to their own defense and were forced to live through the torture that the Japanese soldiers bore upon them. …show more content…
The ‘creative’ methods to that the Japanese used were live burials, mutilations, “death by ‘ice’, ‘fire’, and ‘dogs’”. They ravaged through all of China, obliterating, and dehumanizing everyone in their path. Tens of thousands of women raped, hundreds of thousands killed in murdering contests and overall leading to the annihilation of a whole city. But who exactly should fingers be pointed at? Taking into consideration everything that was done and who did what, we can draw multiple conclusions: that either the soldiers and commanding officers who were personally committing the atrocities were responsible, the Imperial Japanese government who were in the background with enough resources to prevent everything from occurring, or the Japanese emperor Hirohito who was in charge of pulling all the strings and therefore had the necessary power to withdraw the Japanese soldiers. Despite the government and emperor having the power to prevent the destruction of the city, in this case, the ones responsible for this act of cruelty and dehumanization of Nanking were the Japanese soldiers and commanding officers to a significant
