It may not be just overconfident, that individual may have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD. What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? According to Mayo Clinic the word Narcissistic Personality Disorder is defined as, “is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others.” The term narcissistic is originated from an ancient Greek legend, the story of Echo and Narcissus. According to the legend Echo fell in love with Narcissus, who was an uncommonly handsome but also a vain young man. Narcissus constantly rejected her expressions of love. The mythical god Apollo was angered by Narcissus’s pride and self satisfaction, and condemned him to die without ever knowing human love. Narcissus saw a pool of clear water and saw his face reflected on the surface of the water and fell in love with the reflection. Since he had feel in love with his own reflection and not it being able to replicate the love he eventually died next to the pool of water. In order for a person to be diagnosis with Narcassistic Personality Disorder they are to meet five to more traits. The most observers regard grandiosity as one of the important single of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The term grandiosity in NPD “refers to an unrealistic sense of superiority a sustained view of oneself as better than others that cause the narcissist to view others with disdain or as inferior.” (Psychology Today) Few of the symptoms of a NPD are a need to be the center of attention or admiration in a social situation. Has a grandiose sense of self importance disregards other people importance other than their own. Someone being diagnosed with NPD is very strongly sense of entitlement, is exploitative of others, takes advantage of others to achieve their own ends, envious of others, and lacks empathy. Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders, all of which reflect an inability in the affected person to accept the demands and limitations of the world. These disorders may regularly interfere with a person's behavior and interactions with family, friends or co-workers. Among the other personality disorders are paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Although people with narcissistic personality disorder have an exaggerated image of their own importance, they have vulnerable
