Introduction Narelle Autio was born and raised in the beautiful city of Adelaide in 1969. At the University of South Australia, Narelle completed her Visual Arts degree. She then began her career as a photojournalist at the Adelaide Advertiser before then leaving Australia in 1994. Autio started by travelling the USA and Europe thoroughly and then in England she worked for a numerous amount of UK newspapers as well as Australia’s News Limited London bureau. After staying in Europe for a duration of almost three years she decided to move back to Australia and work for The Sydney Morning Herald. Her photos vary with different themes, but one of her main ones includes water. In this particular theme she captures swimmers under the water and sometimes filters it into black and white. Another theme would include photographing the beach and people soaking up the sunshine. She likes to incorporate the energy and drama in the beach scene and to do this she often spends a day running up and down the beach to find the perfect picture. Autio also like to create sharp contrast by taking photos at a telescopic view. This makes figures occupied in our strangely static world shrink to miniature proportions. This is her view on her photos and what she is photographing. With these themes she created books and one of her most famous is called ‘The Seventh Wave’. She continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of her viewers. Her sophisticated use of colour, light and composition, has evoked the complex beauty of Australia’s landscape which is normally eroded by clichés and postcards. Obviously she has had a lot of interest and people are won over by her creativity as she has won several awards on various occasions. These include; World Press Awards, an American Picture of the Year Award, a Walkley Award and she was the first Australian to win the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Her work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Parliament House Collection, Artbank, National Gallery of Victoria, Samstag Museum of Art, Australian National Maritime Museum, as well as many private and corporate collections. Autio’s Audience would also been interested in street photography and the other small themes of masterpieces. She connects with her audience in a way with her involving the beach and water in many of her photos and as Australians love those two things, there's already an instant connection.
