Dragons are real. They may not be real in the sense of having claws and wings but in the imaginary sense. Dragons are problems we have to face. There are small dragons like holes in your jeans or having homework and there are bigger ones like divorce and depression. They all have something in common, you can let it defeat you or you can defeat it. It can be scary to face dragons as in the words from Beowulf “Beowulf and fear are strangers.” Beowulf faced his demons and dragons more literally but he still did it without hesitation. Just as beowulf faced Grendel, Grendel's mother and the dragon I have faced finding friends, College applications and Self image in a very similar manner. For twelve years Grendel terrorizes the city of Geats until Beowulf slayed him with ease. Similarly I had faced an issue with finding good friends for years. Little did I know how easy it was. I had a great friend right under my nose for a long time. Defeating this dragon was a lot easier than I though even though it hung or my head for years. "Till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend/Grendel who haunted the moors, the wild/Marshes, and made his home in a hell./Not hell but hell on earth.” For me it did feel like hell on earth. Just like Beowulf I killed my demon only to find the next.

In a way we have all faced seemingly undefeatable beasts. These impossible battles are necessary to fully experience and appreciate the good parts of life. I feel that Beowulf understood this to the full extent. Life without battle would almost be pointless because it is in defeating these dragons that we truly live. The true beauty of battles and dragons is that none of us face it or deal with it in the same way. Just as a large dragon can handle many arrow and a small dragon can only handle a few we should not judge people on how they handle their battles because for some people one hit is enough to knock them
