They were walking peacefully when they started to walk past the property that used to belong to the mayor where Liesel used to steal his books. Eventually, they ended up talking about the books she used to read to him, and the book he wrote for her when a man wearing a Hitler Youth hat walked up to them and took out a gun. Max told Liesel to run, and she did. While Liesel was running, she eventually heard a gunshot, and at that moment Liesel ran immediately back to Max and saw a bullet hole in his chest. Max was still alive, but barely. The one who shot Max was running away from the scene, but Liesel was still in shock to do anything. Liesel promised Max he would be okay, and that she was going to get help. She yelled for help at the top of her lungs, but no one was coming, and Max knew this. As Max was slowly fading away, he muttered his final words. With Max’s body in her arms, Liesel was crying beyond belief. I let Liesel stay with him for a while before I took him away.
There was no proper burial service for Max as Liesel and Mr. Steiner did not have the money. However, many people still sent their condolences to Liesel. The death of Max affected Liesel almost as much as her brother’s death, but many people tried to help her get through
