Two of the most notable landscape artists of this period were Nathaniel Hone (1831-1917) and Paul Henry (1877-1958). Both artists were intent on capturing the beauty and grandiose nature of the Irish countryside, although they were influenced by different artistic movements of their times. Nathaniel Hone spent a large portion of his life in France and thus was inspired by the impressionist style of painting, his landscapes painted with sketchy, visible brushstrokes. One of his contemporaries, Crampton Walker, described has landscapes as being painted in “low and restrained tones, but with great dignity, a grace of freedom, a subtlety of tone and poetic beauty.” Paul Henry followed in the footsteps of Hone, focusing on painting the landscape
