Nathan's narrow-mindedness and ignorance cause people to oppose his opinions even his own family. His obsession with “saving” those that did not need saving pushed Orleanna away because in while he was obsessing over religion he neglected his responsibilities as a father and husband. Nathan pushed away his daughters even his little helper Leah who loved him so much. The girls turned on him when he proved he no longer had faith in them and allowed them to express themselves. Living in the Congo was a hard experience for the girls and as a father, he did not make it any easier as he should have.
