My overall view of Richard R. Wright SR, is that he was a phenomenal leader who paved the way for me and my fellow classmates to even be here at Savannah State University. This is evident because Major Wright founded this school during a time when going to school was not an option let alone becoming the president of the university. A very famous and influential quote that Wright said was “Tell em’ we’re rising”. I feel that those four words shinned through his whole life, after he made it over obstacle after obstacle. An when his life came to an end I believe that him and everyone that had the pleasure of encountering him knew that he had risen, and made it his job to help other rise as well. Starting early in life he faced rough times, he was born into slavery; which is a circumstance that would cripple most people. I think that instead of crippling him it gave him a pedestal to stand on and a extra boost for him to change the world for his people. Wright loved freedom because he knew what it meant and valued it. He valued it so much that one of his life’s goals was to have a day to celebrate the freedom that was still new and fresh to most African Americans at the time. Time after time the idea of a day to commemorate the freedom of his people was shut down he never gave up until the job was done. Even when the day was created through all the glory and honor in it that still was not the end of his endeavor in fact his whole life consisted of presiding over a college, founder of the freedom day, owner of a bank, a historical solider and much
