The National Panhellenic Council endorsed Membership Intake Process is the Council taking a stand. It’s the NPHC way of saying, something must be done after an overwhelming increase in individuals becoming seriously injured or killed, due to hazing. They voted to change the pledge process, after a lot of money was spent on law suits.
The council said the word “pledge” and hazing is illegal. MIP this is the process each Greek chapter use to bring new members into the organization; a time for potential members to learn about the history of the organization, an opportunity to develop a sense of pride in one self and in the organization, along with general …show more content…
Why isn't it working?
The NPHC has tried to prevent hazing by implementing MIP however, it still exists. Only difference is it’s called MIP, but the concept is pledging is now done “underground” or in secret. It is believed that when you go through this process, you are earning your letters.
3. Why do fraternity members and initiates insist they still must participate in "underground pledging" and conduct the MIP contrary to the methods set forth by each fraternity?
The reason some Fraternity/Sororities members and initiates still went through hazing “underground” pledging and conduct the MIP was they wanted to gain the respect of other Greek Organizations.
Another reason some endured underground pledging was they felt they gained a sense of accomplishment and felt better prepared for life’s challenges because of completing a membership intake process that included hazing. Participants felt that their hazing experiences prepared them for life in general.
Some felt they were well deserve because they didn’t choose the easy route of the “alumna chapter”, but they chose to endure the physical, mental and emotional abuse so they would be official and not a “paper” member or someone that others felt
