The voices of Native Americans have yet to be heard because of their humbleness, American arrogance, greed, and history repeating itself. Through out this book it made me question who I am, where do I come from, and also be ashamed of this great nation we call the United States. The beginning of the end of the Native Americans came once Christopher Columbus landed and the Tainos greeted the Europeans with gifts and honor. Not only did the Tainos greet stranger but all over the Americas The Navahos, Santee Sioux, Cheyennes, Modocs, Arapahos, Kiowas, Comanches, Nez Perecés, Utes and The Apache. We never seem to learn about history no matter how many classes are taken, books are read, movies watched; because we are only told what the winner wants us to hear. It seems like Americans seem superior and anything different from them causes fear and has to be controlled “…efficiently destroy the culture of the Sioux and replace it with the white man’s civilization.” (Brown 426). History repeats itself after the genocide against Indians; African-Americans are forced into slavery seen as anything but humans for their skin color, which is still a problem till this day. Japanese-Americans like Indians are sent to camps during World War II seen as a threat therefore they must be put in camps cause they might all be a “danger” to Americans. And currently this present day Hispanics specifically Mexican/Mexican-Americans are currently being persecuted being of a brown skin tone now seems to classify you as an immigrant. At one point Chief Manuelito did not understand why the Americans teamed up with the Mexicans “…for they knew that many of the Mexicans had Indian blood…” (Brown 15). That quote made me feel like my people have now being persecuted twice. Getting told to go back to where you came from when I like the person telling me such a hurtful comment come from immigrants.
