Some similarities around the effects of colonization on these different nations include the reduction of native land, culture and rights. The Navajo people and the Mayans were both, either in part or entirely, colonized by the Spanish. Both of these nations had deep, spiritual connections to the land, which was forcibly taken from them through treaties that they didn't understand, as well as being threatened with violence in order to assimilate with European and/or American culture. The Navajo people were forced by the United States military to walk roughly three hundred miles across the southern USA (The National Museum of the American Indian). This killed many Navajo people, either through starvation, disease or drowning. This event was later named “The Long Walk,” and is a large part of Navajo history. For the Maya, the Spanish brought disease as well as their religion and cultural practices, which heavily differed from those of the Maya. While there are many cultural differences between all of these nations, the assimilation and genocidal strategies used against them were all very
