Sailors shopping all over town while in uniform is becoming a normal scene. Senior Enlisted leaders need to understand the authorized locations in wearing Navy Working Uniforms (NWU’s) and how this affects safety of the Sailors. This paper will discuss background information, discussion, and the recommendation for future direction on the wear of the NWU’s.
Background Information
The advanced uniforms Sailors wear today as their daily working uniform increase efficiency in the workspace and desire for Sailors actually wanting to wear them, other than just at work. The amount of time spent in research and development, with the Sailors feedback, slowly led to a new manner of wear of the NWU type 1, 2, and 3 uniforms. Seeing the other services approved to wear off base assisted the drive for the Navy to change their view. The current Islamic State, referred to as ISIL and ISIS, have grown in members and followers. This growing threat has already seen the attack on two military members from Canada that led to the Canadian military to order no uniforms worn outside of a base (Lestch, 2014). Additionally, a few days ago the United States Federal Bureau of investigations and Homeland Security warned the growing concern for service members on social media. The threat comes from information leading to ISIS recruiting individuals to scan for U.S. service members accounts to target them and their families at home in the United States and abroad (Feds urge US military members to scrub social media accounts over ISIS attack concerns,2014).
