Imagine that you live in a world with an unfair system that doesn't always show love. In the novel Unwind by Neal Shurterman, when children aren’t the perfect child that every parent wishes they had, they could have their child unwound. The text explores how the characters in the novel were able to find solace, love and friendship in places that they thought wasn’t possible.

Some kids don’t have a voice against the unfair system that they were born into, but that changed with Connor and Risa when they fought against the system. Connor felt betrayed by his parents because they wanted to get rid of him. Risa was failed by the system before she was even able to talk, she grew up in a ward of the state. “Let’s see.you’ve been a part of the state since birth. It looks like your behavior has been exemplary. Your grades have been respectable, but not excellent”(Shusterman 22). With Risa, it’s evident that nothing worked in her favor and she couldn’t do much to change that. Connor and Risa were able to survive thanks to people who sacrificed to help them. Lev was happy when he saw Connor again at the graveyard, even though Connor wasn’t the most thrilled. Risa was comforted when she was playing the piano after her injury in the explosion. The Admiral had Emby live with him on the ranch since the Admiral couldn’t return to the graveyard. Connor, Risa, and Lev are examples of unlikely friends. Who would have thought that Connor, a rebel, Risa, a pianist, and Lev, a religious tithe, would be friends? It’s nice to know that even though they are so different, they are still friends. This book is filled with challenges kids face and how they overcome them. “Wisdom you can take to the grave, then dig it up again when you need solace. Solace-that means comfort”(Shusterman 121).
