The Israelite exile and the destruction of their holy temple (Beit haMikdash 587 bce) by Nebuchadnezzar occurred in Jerusalem, the southern kingdom. Prior to the destruction of the temple Nebuchadnezzar, around 606 bce, began the deportation of the elite of Judah by sending King Jehoiachin, his wives, mighty men of valor and ten thousand captives and all craftsmen and smiths to Babylon. (Tanakh 611).

While many attribute Psalm 137 to Jeremiah; reading the first 3 verses indicates another author. Using the context of “there we sat” found in the first verse questions Jeremiah’s involvement because Jeremiah was corresponding with the captives, while he remained in Jerusalem, encouraging them to accept their captivity and find the best of Babylon
