When reflecting back on your life, would you be happy? This is the main foundation of the stories written by Willa Cather and Stephen Crane. The stories, Neighbour Rosicky and The Blue Hotel, had to look back on both life, love, and actions to show how happy the main characters are in the plots. Though each story is similar to the other, the reflection on the character's life is drastically different. Both Neighbour Rosicky and The Blue Hotel have minor similarities. Each plot shows character development and a foreshadowing of weather. Though the characters have some similarities, the authors take their works in different directions. This is meant to show the reader of diversity of every choice each character had.

Rosicky, for example, had to overcome hard times and was grateful for what he had accomplished. Even when the older man was reflecting back onto his life, he was happy. “Moreover, he [Rosicky] had what he would call a happy home life” (Cather 1870). Even when his land could not produce any valuable crops, Rosicky suggested to enjoy the food his family. “That’s why we’re havin’ a picnic. We might as well enjoy what we got” (Cather 1876). Rosicky appreciated what little he had, such as a family and a home. In The Blue Hotel, Scully was proud of his business and enjoyed his guest. Regardless of showing patience towards the Swede, Scully was against the man in order to let his son fight him at the end of the story. “You’ll not have to whip all of us. You’ll have to whip my son Johnnie. An’ the man what troubles you durin’ that time will have me to dale with” (Crane 1795). In the end, the Swede was murdered by a gambler because the Swede was becoming aggressive to have a drinking companion. The characters in The Blue Hotel, did not show that they valued
