Confucian views believed land was a praiseworthy possession which benefited during the emerging trading world. Peasants and farmers improved agricultural techniques led to a commercialized economy such as, increasing their yields of crops, taking advantage of soils, irrigation systems, use of fertilizer, and being introduced to new crops. Neo-Confucian values influenced all aspects of maintaining stability throughout China and Japan. It was significant and popular among the Ming and Qing dynasties because it appealed to the emperors. Its emphasis on filial piety, self-discipline, and obedience shaped a long lasting cultural influence on society. Neo-Confucianism led civilians to be more moral and respectful.
