My action plan is starting "an adult identity education" by challenging the patriarchal and hierarchical system in my church with Boyung Lee's book, "Transforming Congregations through Community." Lee talks about communal faith by criticizing Korean church system in this book. Each chapter in this book, "Transforming Congregations through Community" has "suggested exercise and discussion topics" with bible verses. As having a small group with adults in my community, we can learn about national and cultural faith identity and reflect on ourselves. Since Korean culture is rooted in Neo-Confucianism, it is not easy to challenge the culture itself directly. I do not think the Neo-Confucianism is bad. I believe other cultures can learn lots of things from the Neo-Confucianism like respecting elders. However, the biggest problem is that some communities use the Neo-Confucianism for their own benefit, and the most beneficiaries are males. It is hard to find the equal role of women with men in my community. One of the negative side of Neo-Confucianism is that women's role, position and authority is regarded as lower than men, even women in my culture and community seems to exist to serve husband and nurture their children. I often see that female pastors serve the meal for the male pastors and the female pastors always sit at the corner of the table to refill the side dishes not only for themselves but mainly for male pastors. Furthermore, I can see the hierarchical relationship during the lunch time. The senior pastor and associate pastors sit in different place to where congregation eats. They have their special room during the lunch time and sometimes, the important people like elders or special guests can join the room with the senior pastor.
