"Social media has became the niche of our society, it also has raised many issues regarding cyber bullying and even national threats. Moreover, the government is supposedly monitoring the activity of social media and the content posted on users accounts. Nonetheless, many citizenry are opposed to this. Should our use of the internet be monitored by authoritative figures? Additionally, to what extent in the U.S. does the government–federal, state, and local–have the duty to monitor internet content? Net neutrality is a prime exemplar of the government intervening with how citizens utilize the internet. Miraculously, the FCC, the same people who wanted to have users pay to visit the internet, released a statement; “At the dawn of the commercial Internet, President Clinton and a Republican Congress agreed it would be the policy of the United States ‘to preserve the vibrant and competitive free market that presently exists for the Internet . . . unfettered by Federal or State regulation.’” They realized that by turning social media into a net income, it would breach our freedom as Americans.
