Net Neutrality
Have you ever wondered what life without regulated internet access would look like? Well, it’s certainly a world that many would not desire. Sadly, it is currently a reality that we must come face to face with. The Net Neutrality laws, which ensured citizens unlimited internet access, are now coming to an end. These regulations were a shield to the American people, protecting their personal information from Internet Service Providers. Without Net Neutrality, however, companies are free to favor the wealthy and stagnate internet speed.The American people are now under the control of those they barely knew, Internet Service Providers. Net Neutrality should be implemented to improve society as a whole.

Internet Service Providers, which range from Verizon all the way to the infamous Comcast, did not have an inordinate amount of control. What can Internet Service Providers do now with unlimited power? Well, companies can offer bundles or deals to allow users more access or quality to specific content. While this could be beneficial for wealthier families who can afford the services, lower income families will have to pay the price. Poverty-stricken communities may encounter more difficulties to gain the same internet services as other demographic groups. In an article by Forbes, the author claims that with Net Neutrality “content providers enjoyed equal access to the internet to distribute their content, and consumers with internet service also enjoyed fair access to the content they wanted.” Time Magazine, after the removal of Net Neutrality, stated, “In the same vein of premium cable bundles that give you every channel possible, ISPs could offer deluxe options. Critics believe this would unfairly benefit higher-income households at a time when internet communication is crucial.”The internet should be open to everyone, not only a small minority of people who can spare the money. According to an article in the New York Times, “This is the ‘end of the world as we know it’ for the internet...If we don’t have net neutrality protections that enforce tenets of fairness online, you give internet service providers the ability to choose winners and losers.” We, as the people, need Net Neutrality in our lives, not just as a set of governing rules and laws, but as a measure to guarantee the basic foundation on which this country was built upon, freedom. Not just any freedom, but the power to delve deep into the universe of the world wide web and all that it has to offer. Our society will never be the same without Net Neutrality, and it is time that we claim it
