The brain is a part of the central nervous system which controls everything we do including walking, breathing, digesting food, smelling, and many more important functions of the body. The brain plays a part in the functioning of all other organs of the body as well. Sometimes a brain does not always work correctly, and people are needed to study and fix the brain. Neurology is the area in surgery and medical studies that studies the central nervous system, which includes nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain. If there were not people to correct the mishaps of the nervous system, more people could die or remain in very sick conditions. Neurology is the most vital health profession because it saves people from devastating effects of losing …show more content…
Some of the functions are done without thinking such as breathing and digesting food, but also learned actions such as walking and talking. Additionally, the brain controls the five senses that mostly every human possesses. The sense of touching, for example, is controlled by the somatosensory cortex of the brain, while the sense of hearing is controlled by the primary auditory cortex of the brain. (Buonomano 79-85). Although there are many specific types of brain tumors, there are brain tumors that are specifically located in places of the brain such as the somatosensory cortex or the primary auditory cortex which can affect someone’s senses. When these brain tumors are present in an area of the brain that are affected, the normal body functions of a person can be changed completely. A person with a brain tumor could lose any of the five senses, such as hearing or sight, but could also lose their ability to even walk or speak. A neurologist can locate a brain tumor and find out if it is cancerous and needs to be removed. After a brain tumor is located, the neurologist will determine if the tumor can be located safely through surgery or if the surgeon will have to use a different technique. By a neurologist locating and figuring out how to remove a tumor, it could save a person from losing all or some of the …show more content…
The brain, “requires a storage mechanism and modification,”(Buonomo 22) in order to maintain memories. Slight memory loss is normal when a person starts to age, but memory loss can be caused from a serious disease or tumor in the brain. For example, one of the most popular diseases relating to memory loss is Alzheimer's, which is a very serious form of memory loss that a person could have. Many times people take for granted the ability to remember important details about their life. For anyone that has witnessed someone with Alzheimer’s, the appreciation of, “the essence of our character and memories,” (Buonomo 22) should increase. Additionally, other brain injury that is related to memory loss are devastating too. Waking up one day and not being able to remember any of your life including your family, friends, or any information you obtained throughout many years of education is something that no person should have to go through. Furthermore, not only will it affect the person who loses the memory, but it will also affect the close loved ones of the person. Although neurologists currently do not have a cure for Alzheimer's, there are many other problems in the brain affecting memory loss that neurologists can reverse. (Causes of Memory Loss). In most cases, neurologists can find a way to cure the trauma with surgery or medication depending on the
