Neuroscience in Nazi Germany
Were there any positive results from/ did we learn anything from Nazi sciences? If so, what were they?
In the early 1920’s, German neurosciences were claimed to be some of the best in the world. Due to an elite work ethic paired with extensive knowledge, resources, and funding, the Nazis used their technological advantages to attempt to “purify” or “cleanse” the gene pool. Focused on racial hygiene, the Nazis first undertook a sterilization campaign against those with so-called “mental defects," which included neurologic patients with epilepsy and other disorders, as well as psychiatric patients. From 1939-1941, the Nazis even resorted to the euthanasia …show more content…
Rascher’s alleged goal was to test survival gear for the Luftwaffe by dressing patients in pilot uniforms and then subjecting them to ice-cold water to simulate conditions one might experience at sea. The patients had their temperatures taken rectally and the cooling rate was then charted. Rascher used various methods for reheating hypothermic prisoners over the course of hundreds of experiments. Although incredibly unethical, the data acquired in the charts in Dachau provide some of the most comprehensive data in describing end-stage hypothermia in humans even to this date. Unfortunately, most patients either did not survive these experiments, or were executed shortly …show more content…
In the 1930s and 1940s, the medicines used were still a new type of antibiotic with terrible side effects. Doctors at Ravensbruck tested the antibiotics by gashing the legs of patients and rubbing wood shavings, ground glass, and infected matter on the open wounds. To simulate gangrene, blood vessels were tied off or cut, and none of the patients’ wounds were allowed to heal. After the doctor’s were ‘done’ with one patient, their body would be autopsied for signs of whether the drugs were effective or not. It’s worth noting that most of the research was a duplication of data foreign doctors from the U.K. and the U.S. already had. Other drugs and surgical procedures were tried out at many camps. Some camps splashed patients with mustard gas, and some secretly poisoned patients and immediately killed them for their bodies to be
