I took the time to go over the conversation and how it made me feel to allow myself that time to process. I also thought about what it would be like in the mother’s position, informed of a diagnosis with no explanation. I found that after taking the time to relax, refocus, and then reflect, it helped me acknowledge, process, and move on from the initial conversation, allowing me a clear mind to be fully present for the rest of my shift. Evaluation Recognizing my feelings of apprehension and taking the time to acknowledge and reflect on them was something I was proud of and thought went well in this situation. Doing so was key to preventing myself from having compassion fatigue or burnout and enabled me to provide the best care possible throughout the day. I also think despite being overwhelmed at the time of the conversation, I addressed the mom’s questions and concerns to the best of my ability. That being said, I feel like initially the team should have given the patient and family more information on autoimmune encephalitis at the time they provided that
