New Mexico's current governor is Susana Martinez. She is New Mexico's first female governor, and the first hispanic female elected governor in history. A bill that is going through the government right now is House Bill 206. This bill states that a rape victim, specifically a woman, if she got pregnant she would be charged with a third degree felony for trying to get an abortion. New Mexico Rep. Cathrynn Brown states that this bill is not intended to target those victims of sexual assault, but with the baby there is DNA of the rapist so they can find him and prosecute him for his crime. Susana Martinez advanced a proposal to require women who become pregnant from rape to prove they were forcibly raped in order to qualify for childcare assistance. Further A bill that is amended in the second house must be sent back to the first house for agreement. Then after both houses of legislature agree on the final bill it is copied carefully with all the amendments. After that the bill gets sent to the governor for him/her to sign it, or veto it.
