Title: New York v Sullivan 376 U.S. 254 (1964)
Facts: On March 29th, 1960 there was an ad posted in the New York Times that was about “the struggle for civil rights”, and raising money for the fight for civil rights. Sullivan, who was the police commissioner at the time in Montgomery, felt offended even though his name wasnt mentioned because the ad was criticizing the olice and how they acted at a protest was wrong. In response, Sullivan brought a libel action against the New York Times, as well as the individual authors of the ad, claiming that there was false information in the ad- with one example being that the ad said “My Country Tis of Thee” was sang when it was really the“Star Spangled Banner”, and the judge said the “falsehoods”
