Our team explored many topics for the upcoming NHD competition. For this year’s NHD theme, we have chosen “Japanese American Rights during WWII” for the Rights and Responsibilities theme. In our English class, we were reading an excerpt from Farewell to Manzanar which is about a Japanese-American family who were deported to various internment camps. We were intrigued that President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 to have the authority to relocate Japanese Americans to internment camps. We thought choosing this topic will be relatable to this year’s theme because it has to do with the rights of the Japanese Americans.
In order for us to create a historical document, we needed to gather information about the Executive Order. We began to surf the internet to collect information by finding various websites. We created a bibliography to organize websites needed to search information. We went to a local library and checked out a book which included a plethora of pictures and documents relating to the cause and effects of the Executive Order. We searched videos of interviews online of former Japanese American internees who talked about their experiences. Few of which we chose for our documentary. Afterwards, we proceeded in constructing a storyboard to start planning out our documentary. We used online software called Prezi which we found appropriate for arranging the storyboard.
