Have you ever been in a situation where you felt completely hopeless with no one to run to for help? That is the life of Nic Sheff. Nic is in a constant battle with his addiction to methamphetamine and heroin. He grew up quickly and became familiarized with drugs at a young age. Constantly running in and out of rehabilitation centers was a common thing for him. Growing up in a wealthy family, no one would have thought Nic would have turned out the way that he did. From a young age, he started doing whatever he felt like doing and no one had control over his actions. He started experiencing with hard drugs and found himself struggling to come off of them. Throughout Nic’s life he has been homeless, jobless, completely broke, robbed, and starved all because he continued to put what little he had, into buying drugs. The first thing he wanted to do when he woke up was put a needle to his arm. That’s also what he wanted to do secondly, then third, and so on. Nic’s addiction had gotten so bad that he had no money to his name so he felt the need to steal from his family. He would break into his family’s beach house and take little items that he felt were unnoticeable. Nic’s body was slowly giving up on him because he wasn’t taking care of himself the way that he should. He would barely eat a meal a day and get little sleep. “For some reason my shirt is off, my ribs sticking through the skin-tracks up and down my arms. From where I’d missed the vein shooting up, my arms are swollen and aching. I’m broken out all over and thin, so goddamn thin” (Sheff 125). This quote shows how much of a toll the drugs that Nic was using were greatly affecting his body. His body was slowly giving up on him.
