Cliff is an old man, beaten and left for dead in a ditch. Many people pass by, both believers and non-believers, but none make any effort to help Cliff. Nick decides to help Cliff, helping him find a place to stay and tending to his wounds, washing him and feeding him. He trades his own boots and clothes so that he can buy some for Cliff. Later on, when Nick has rejoined the group and is back on the Red Road, he notices that he is closer to Charis. Shad explains to him that, because he sacrificed his time and energy and delayed his journey to serve Cliff, the King had accelerated his journey, a reward for Nick’s deed. Nick discovered that God rewards those who obey him. His attitude towards this discovery was that he was encouraged by it. He aspired to continue serving the King.
One’s attitude toward discovery is important, it determines the individual’s response. If Nick ignored the discovery of the Chasm-Crosser, and continued to be stubborn and proud, he would never have crossed the chasm, and would end up traveling to Erebus. If he had ignored the words from the TravelGuide, he would have stayed at Bartholomew’s estate, and he would never reach Charis. Nick’s change of attitude practically saved him in this situation.
