The mining of copper and nickel and become very useful for the production of certain products. Without copper we would not be able to produce items such as wires, pipes, and various instruments. If we ran out of nickel we would not have tableware, handcuffs, or even some types of Christmas decorations. Although these sound like such important items, what is at stake to increase the production of them is too much and unnecessary. There has been talk of the creation of a PolyMet copper-nickel mine in northern Minnesota between the towns of Babbitt and Hoyt Lakes. This sounds like a project worth promoting at first until you hear what the effects are. The cite of this mine is predicted to be on the grounds of Superior National Forest. Not only will they be destroying one of the national forests in Minnesota, but they also will be demolishing the beauty that has been preserved. The process of this mining is said to take a total of 38 years. They …show more content…
PolyMet has decided on the location of the Superior Forest because they know that there is a lot of copper and nickel below it. This project seems like it would not be possible because it is a national forest, but PolyMet has an advantage. The only way they will be able to create their mine is with mineral rights, which unfortunately they have. PolyMet has offered the government a trade of land. They said that if they could have the Superior Forest that they will give them in return another piece of land to replace it. I think that PolyMet does not have a solid case in this situation. They may have the mineral rights, but they will be creating more bad than good by digging this mine. If they go through with the project they will for sure get increased amounts of copper and nickel but they will also be ruining lives of innocent animals, plants, and residents of that
