The skin protects the body from foreign materials such as microbes and sunlight. It’s a matric of connective tissues which regulates temperature and sense of touch (reference). Non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) affects the skin cells called keratinocytes. They are found in the epidermis and dermis of the skin. The two types of non-melanoma skin cancer (BCC and SCC) affects the keratinocytes through different locations. The BCC affects keratinocytes at the bottom of the epidermis and the SCC develops deep in the dermis and can develops into melanoma skin cancer. (reference)
The Dermal delivery system is only used for treatment for targets which are localised such as skin cancer. The process of topical dermal delivery involves absorption by the permeation stratium corneum and penetration of drug in the epidermis. (Reference). The findings by the (vishal madhan cancer) use of sunscreen have better protection from SCC, whilst on the BCC results are not clear. The first line treatment of the NMSC is surgical removal of lesion with the use of cosmetics and other non-surgical method to ensure complete elimination of cancerous cells. (vishal uk) . According to (vishal) “Histological examination of excisional margins is necessary to ensure complete removal of the NMSC”. Skin cancer surgery may not be suitable to everyone and can leave devastating scars although the excisional margin surgery insures complete removal of non-melanoma but can’t assure complete treatment. In addition to that the surgery treatment is limited by prolonged post-operative recovery time (mcgillisfein) .The uncertainty of surgery leaves out other treatment alternatives which are non-evasive such as creams and gels.
