Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a medical term that describing the inability to achieve or maintain an erect penis adequate for sexual function. This is one of the most common problems for men and is seen to increase with advancing age.
Several men have difficulty with erections from time to time, but in some men, it is a regular and more severe problem. It causes low self-esteem, performance anxiety, depression and stress. It can also affect the quality of a marriage or intimate relationships.
There are many advances that have been made in treating erectile dysfunction.

What causes ED?

ED can result from medical, physical or psychological factors. Many conditions can reduce blood flow into the penis; like heart disease, diabetes and smoking.
The penis cannot store blood during an erection. A man with this problem, called venous leak or cavernosal dysfunction, cannot maintain an erection because blood does not remain trapped in the penis. This condition can occur at any age.
Certain diseases, injury or surgery in the pelvic area can result in damage of nerves in the penis.
Sexual activity requires the mind and body to work together. Psychological, emotional or relationship problems can cause or worsen ED; these may include:

Advancing age cannot be the main cause of erectile dysfunction. Even though sexual function decreases with age, many men enjoy sexual activity in later ages also.
ED can also be an early warning sign of a serious illness, example heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes mellitus. Diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause can improve the overall health of the patient, as well as help restore your sexual drive.
