Writing in a global context is one at which you communicate with someone of a different culture and have to keep in mind their personal beliefs while doing so. The way I speak in everyday life, code-switches based on who I am talking to and what the specific situation is. My general upbringing has given me some exposure on how to act in situations whether it is in a nonprofessional or professional setting. My nonprofessional skills have been developed through spending time on both Facebook and Twitter. On the other hand, my professional skills have progressed due to my involvement in LinkedIn, writing emails, and joining clubs. It has taught me proper format on how to address someone based on what they personally believe is respectful towards themselves. In the advertising community, people are addressed by their first names instead of using “Mr.”, “Mrs.”, or “Ms.” I learned this by emailing an advertising professional for setting up an interview with him in order to learn more about the field. He respectfully pointed out that in this field, you always address a person by their first names. Without him pointing that out, I am lucky enough that I did not offend him in any way by addressing him improperly for our field. If I was dealing with someone within my field as well as from another culture that could have ended up being a lot worse. It’s easy to have a miscommunication through email, especially while dealing with other cultures. For example, my dad has had the opportunity to work with several people from different cultures, including China. In China, when they do not understand a word in an email that my dad sends out they will take out a dictionary and use the first definition they find as its literal meaning. This has caused misinterpretation between my dad and them because several words in the English language have multiple meanings to Americans. I even joined the EBoard this year and took on the position of Secretary and Blogger for the club. This allows me to get even closer with the industry as I practice tasks that professionals would do on the daily basis. I am in charge of keeping the club organized as well as editing all the blog posts, and making sure that they are going up on time. I also witness our communication chair manage our social media, our event coordinator schedule tours and speakers, and every other chair member on the board do their tasks. Proper communication is key, and remaining professional is highly important when completing tasks for this organization.
