Normalizing Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has taken place since the beginning of time as a necessity to feed our infants. Originally, infant formula was not an option and breastfeeding was commonplace for all women. The difference between then and now is that women are not at home all the time. Women have evolved in a way where breastfeed should now be considered commonplace, we work outside the home and go out in public all the time. There are many facts that justify breastfeeding our babies that many health professionals whole-heartedly encourage. Laws have been enacted to provide mothers the right to breastfeed in public places and for employers to provide a place for working mothers to pump. Statistics show that in 2010, 75% of mothers

The mother’s milk helps to protect babies from infections such as pneumonia, ear infections, respiratory infections, and gastro-intestinal illnesses. Breast milk gives the baby just enough nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) which keeps getting more common. Breastfeed children may also have a lower risk of diabetes, obesity, and asthma. Mothers who breastfeed have the advantages of reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes as well as less risk for ovarian and breast cancer according to the Montana Breastfeeding Coalition (mtbreastfeedingcoalition.com). The common saying that mothers hear the most “breast is best,” is powerful yet true on many levels. Today’s trends are coming out with appealing shirts such as see-through shirts, deep low cut shirts, and zip front low cut shirts as well as dresses. Women have come to a decision to wear revealing clothing because they are classy and sexy. Fashion shows have been normalized to show off cleavage and body curves to make other women feel confident in what they decided to wear out in public. In reality, we are more likely to see more cleavage on a fashion model than on a nursing mother. While watching the Oscar Award Winners on television the majority of the celebrity women are showing off their dresses on the red carpet usually have a revealing dresses on, but that is okay due to wanting to look attractive and the society doesn’t think anything of it. When we see moms wanting to feed their young in day to day life people think and say everything negative. I feel like society have come to assumptions that breasts are for sex-appeal or objects of play. As a society we have come far out of reach where is it hard to come into realization what breasts are originally used
