The United States is constantly in a fight of balance between Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) also known as North Korea. North Korea is a communist regime that the United States has tried to contain since the Cold War. As a result of the Cold War, North Korea was left in a vulnerable position which later fueled their dislike for the United States. Presently, tension has escalated due to North Korea's new Nuclear Capabilities. Globally this is important because the escalation of nuclear test can create a context for a nuclear war. During the Cold War, its first military conflict was the Korean War, which most United States citizens call the "Forgotten War." While on the other hand, most Koreans remember it as a brutal war. Over the course of the three-year war, "the US reportedly dropped 635,000 tons of explosives on North Korea, including 32,557 tons of napalm; as about 20 percent of the population of Korea were direct casualties of war, or from starvation and exposure." The amount of destruction and fatalities created resentment from North Korea because their homes were the result of a proxy war between several superpowers, and having almost every town burn down in North Korea. In addition, the North Korea War is partly due to the failure of deterrence. Deterrence is sending a message to in a way so that "an enemy will not strike if it knows the defender can defeat the attack or can inflict unacceptable damage in retaliation." Deterrence is a tool to be used indefinitely if it is only a bluff. Deterrence failed during the cold war because the United States did not declare deterrence in advance and engaged in conflict when an unexpected attack comes. The significance of this event that in the 90's many counties were worried about Weapons of Mass Destructions (WMD). As a result of the violation the United States did not result in using multilateral acts of diplomacy, but instead, the US instead issued hard oil sanctions on the DPRK. Currently, the level of concern has raised for North Korea due to the DPRK actively testing and launching (ICBM) that has the capability of reaching the United States and its allies. The recent nuclear test and evidence that the DPRK is building up their weapons arsenal leave the United States on the brink of a nuclear war.
