In “Notes of Narrative Son,” James Baldwin uses the structure of linear narrative with anecdotes and reflections to develop the idea of why his father was the way he was. Page 50: He goes to an all-white restaurant and sits there, (sit-in) the white woman approaches with caution and says, "We don't serve negros here." In a sad tone, he continues to sit there. She repeats herself once more with a firm voice, "We don't serve negros." This angers him. He grabs the closest item to him and picks up a mug half full of water and throws it at her but misses. When he realizes what he's done and where he is, he's frightened. He tried running out the door but a man grabbed him and started beating him, luckily he got loose and ran off. On page 50 he states:
